Underlay is an important consideration and will enhance the quality and features of your new carpet. Underlay has many benefits, which include:

• Improving the underfoot comfort qualities of carpet
• Absorbing the forces that cause your carpet to 'crush'
• Alleviating problems with small imperfections in floors
• Improving the insulation qualities of carpet
• Improving the ability of carpet to insulate against noise
• Underlay is available in three main types - rubber, foam and felt. As each type of underlay is available in different qualities, your Carpet Wise salesperson can advise you on the appropriate choices for the carpet you have selected.
  
  

What is important is the level of quality you choose. A better quality foam or rubber underlay will provide increased cushioning underfoot, will last longer and offer better support for the life of your carpet. It will also provide improved sound, heat and cold insulation, all for a relatively small outlay.

If the existing underlay is only 2 or 3 years old it can be reused but we do not recommend it as it will have deteriorated to some degree, particularly in the high traffic areas. If you are purchasing a carpet that will last many years you need an underlay that will last the same period of time. Think of underlay as insurance and support for your carpet.
